Every manufacturing company today strives to improve efficiency and productivity by leveraging the power of robotics and automation. They, to this end, implement advanced MES systems that promise real-time performance analytics and shop floor data collection. However, the daily operation of most manufacturing companies relies heavily on the human workforce. The overwhelming focus on automation often neglects this critical element. According to the UK industrial statistics, there are there are 10,000 people for every 73 robots working in factories in the UK. Given this fact, it is evident that focusing on data collection and automation alone cannot help achieve the goal of manufacturing optimisation; it is instead creating loopholes in the production process.

MESTEC is changing this status quo.

MESTEC is driven by a mission to improve factory performance through dynamic production planning, automated shop floor data collection, and real-time analytics. It plays a vital role in bridging the gap between the back office and factory floor by offering a purposebuilt solution that continuously enhances manufacturing performance.

MESTEC’s trailblazing, configurable, cloud-based MES solution is catalytic in optimising factory performance with a focus on labour productivity, overall equipment effectiveness, quality, and compliance. It enables real-time data collection, facilitating proactive operations to identify the root cause of poor labour performance and accurate resource scheduling to drive immediate improvement.

In addition, its advanced planning and scheduling tools remove dependency on spreadsheets, streamline planning processes, optimise resource utilisation, maximise capacity, and improve on-time delivery.
“We never overlook the human element in the manufacturing process, and this differentiates us in the market,” says Mark Carleton, General Manager, MESTEC.

A Broad Range of Functionalities

Unlike typical point solutions where it is easy to find a cloud-based solution for OEE, work instructions, WIP tracking, QMS or labour productivity, but a single platform that supports all of these things in the cloud is unique.

The MESTEC solution can be configured for different manufacturing environments and diverse client requirements. It can help clients achieve all their goals irrespective of their objectives.

Take labour productivity, for instance. Businesses often equate labour productivity with the ability to finish a job faster.

They don’t understand that the key to increasing productivity is tracking and identifying the lost time in processes. The MESTEC solution goes beyond offering retrospective analytics on plant performance at the end of the quarter or month. It provides clients with insights into current process inefficiencies, allowing them to fix those in real-time.

The solution efficiently and accurately collects realtime shop floor data from people and machines, increases visibility and productivity, and reduces errors.

“We present the right data to the operators to ensure they can be productive and efficient during manufacturing. Thisis also crucial in ensuring continuous process improvement,” says Carleton.

Lowering the Barrier to Adoption

Another key area MESTEC focuses on is the barrier to adoption. Installing traditional MES solutions is often an uphill task for manufacturers, requiring them to conduct server commissioning, install operating systems, buy database licenses, and configure databases. The entire process requires thousands of pounds of investment. MESTEC addresses this by offering the world’s first cloud-native multi-tenant SaaSbased MES. It can be rapidly deployed with no up-front costs, providing tangible improvements to performance and ROI.

“This is really transformative in the manufacturing landscape. Previously, only large manufacturing organisations could access technology to optimise their production. We are levelling the playing field for small manufacturers,” says Carleton.

The MESTEC solution seamlessly integrates with clients’ existing ERP systems, including Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, and Sage, through APIs. It complements ERP through the detailed modelling of the manufacturing process. This plays a vital role in removing the need for ERP customisations that are typically costly and difficult. MESTEC’s asset performance dashboard further provides manufacturing KPIs about labour efficiency, quality, compliance, and equipment effectiveness to redefine manufacturing processes.

Serving a Wide Variety of Manufacturers

The highly configurable MES from MESTEC has been utilised across a wide spectrum of industries, including aerospace and defence, automotive, food and drink, medical devices, and electronics.

For instance, Domino Printing Sciences, a manufacturer of bespoke coding, marking, and printing technologies, had a legacy on-prem solution that could be unreliable and soon to be unsupported. They needed a scalable, cloudbased solution to boost resiliency and eliminate the need for future upgrades while having a predictable monthly cost. Implementing the MESTEC solution with a pilot in place by the end of month three and full roll out by month seven, it efficiently upgraded without any infrastructure change and user acceptance training typically estimated to last no more than 5-10 minutes.

In another instance, GTK, a custom cable assembly manufacturing company, was capacity and spaceconstrained with orders that exceeded the production volume. Additional hiring was not going to solve the problem. They started measuring resource utilisation only to realise that their wage bills exceeded expectations, as they lost a lot of operator time to non-productive activities. Integrating MESTEC into the system helped them analyse labour productivity in manufacturing operations. The client enhanced their performance against standard time within 12 months and significantly improved labour productivity from 59.3 percent to 86.3 percent and utilisation from 60 percent to over 90 percent. This directly improved GTK’s plant capacity. Currently, they are free from the unrecovered labour burden and continue to gain efficiencies using the data provided by MESTEC.

Success stories like these are a testament to MESTEC’s client-centric approach and zeal to efficiently serve clients. It has recently been acquired by Eyelit, a leader in MES and Quality Management (QMS) solutions for visibility, control, and coordination of manufacturing operations. This acquisition will help MESTEC up its ante in the manufacturing space by finding new growth avenues and bringing innovative ideas to fruition. MESTEC is now expanding globally with its first live implementation in North America.

“We present the right data to the operators to ensure they can be productive and efficient during manufacturing. This is also crucial in ensuring continuous process improvement”

MESTEC is currently growing 40 percent every year. In the coming years, it will tread on the path of continuous innovation by improving its existing technology. Consequently, MESTEC will help more manufacturers to become more efficient.
MESTEC realizes that the entire manufacturing sector is undergoing a rapid shift with the introduction of advanced tools. Manufacturers’ reliance on technology will increase by leaps and bounds in the coming years, but it alone won’t help them achieve the desired objectives. MESTEC enables manufacturers to make their workforce more productive with its advanced manufacturing solutions that do not have an expensive, inflexible, and rigid onpremise architecture.
